We are providing an exciting opportunity, to join Iranti for a 3 month internship as the Communications and Media intern,. This role will be working closely with the Communications and Media team, and other programmes officers on Iranti’s communication and media work. This role is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This internship is a wonderful opportunity to develop your writing skills, gain experience in all aspects of non-profit communications, learn about story-telling for social impact and also boost your CV through practical experience.
The ideal candidate has excellent writing and communications skills and a strong commitment to social justice and human rights, ideally with a strong interest in LGBTIQ rights. The candidate will be able to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, have good organisational skills, and some knowledge on intersectional movement building. The individual must have some knowledge of the human rights sector and the LBQTI community and the advocacy issues relating to LBQTI persons.
Desired Skills and Knowledge.
- Demonstrated strong writing and communication skills in English
- Writing and communication skills in languages other than English would be advantageous
- An ability to write for a numbers of different platforms
- A demonstrable interest in communications, media, and PR for advocacy
- An ability to translate stories from the field into powerful media advocacy tools
- Some experience in social media management website management and/or other forms of online communication would be advantageous
- Photography and/or videography skills and experience would be advantageous
- A demonstrable eye and/or talent for photography and/or videography is a bonus
- Proficiency using platforms such as Microsoft Office Programs, Canva, Mailchimp
- A willingness to take on a variety of tasks
- An ability to work quite independently and take initiative
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies and audiences, in and with diverse communities.
- Proven ability to work independently, and ableness to prioritize concurrently running projects to meet deadlines whilst maintaining consistent attention to detail.
- Experience in LBQTI rights advocacy would be advantageous.
- Demonstrated commitment to the work and values of Iranti.

What you’ll do
As a communications and media intern, your tasks will include the following;
- Creating, writing and producing content that combines text, (and/or) sound, (and/or) video, (and/or) images and various graphics to tell stories and deliver campaigns in a unique and engaging way.
- Writing online content (articles, social media posts, newsletters and otherwise) that communicates Iranti’s work, mission and vision to a wider audience
- Managing, and posting on, social media channels
- Designing and running digital marketing and fundraising campaigns
- Assisting with PR
- Gathering stories and visual material on the projects that can be put out on all communications platforms
- Doing communications and digital fundraising research
- Maintain a pan-African and feminist focus in all content/material produced.
- Assisting with overall communications and marketing strategies
- Any other tasks as delegated by the line supervisor.
Learning outcomes of this communications and media internship;
- Practical work experience in a wide range of elements within communications for non-profits, including social media, content writing, and awareness campaigns
- A wealth of practical experience in content gathering, writing for a variety of platforms, managing social media channels, story-telling for social impact and communications strategy
- A good understanding of the communications needs of a non-profit organisation
- Insights into of the day to day running of a non-profit organisation
