[VACANCY] SAFETY, DIGNITY & FREEDOM 2020 MEDIA TRAINING CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR
Duration: 10 Month Fixed-term Contract
Iranti is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), founded in June 2012 to focus on lesbian, transgender and intersex rights across the African continent. We achieve our purpose through advocacy, movement building and multi-media storytelling. We work with an intersectional lens, often with LGBTI-sector partners, across the region and beyond. We have a ten-person team and operate from our office in Killarney, Johannesburg.
ROLE OBJECTIVE:
The Campaign Co-ordinator is responsible for overseeing the Safety, Dignity and Freedom (SDF) Media Training Campaign, taking place from March to December 2020. The SDF campaign seeks to redress the manner in which LGBTIQ+ people are represented in mainstream media by working with partner organisations in five African countries: (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) in Botswana, Lesbians, Intersex, Transgender, and Other Extensions (LITE) in Malawi, Wings to Transcend in Namibia, Transgender Research Education and Training (TREAT) in Zimbabwe, and Intersex South Africa (ISSA) in South Africa.
The person will be responsible for co-ordinating and facilitating the media training campaign, ensuring that the workplan is implemented and the objectives of the project are achieved.
The position includes travelling regionally, as the Campaign will consist of two trainings per country between April and December 2020. The incumbent will hence require a valid passport and Visa for this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Role includes the following key responsibilities:
Project Management (80%)
· Using the SDF research study (as a primary source) to develop:
o A comprehensive training and engagement plan for all five countries;
o A comprehensive training programme/curriculum for all five countries;
o All the training materials to conduct the training consisting of a facilitator guide and all learner materials;
o A media reporting toolkit to ensure effective messaging and coverage;
o A reporting tool to document backlash in media and community response to the in-country publications.
· Coordinate the planning and ensure that all logistics are taken care to conduct media training sessions in each country and all other engagements as required by the plan;
· Communicate and train on the implementation of the reporting tool for documenting backlash in media and community response to the in-country publications
· Travel to each country twice to ensure that all plans are successfully implemented
· Liaising with partner organisations and journalists to ensure the successful implementation of the plan, as well as providing support to partners.
Reporting and M&E: (20%)
· Assisting in drafting the questionnaire to be used for monitoring and evaluation of media training engagements
· Ensuring that reports from partner organisations are completed and submitted timeously
· Assisting in compiling overall donor reports based on reports from partner organisations
Skills, Experience and behaviour requirements
· A commitment to Iranti’s mission and a clear understanding of the links between advocacy research, and community building, campaigning and media work with a proven track record of delivering effective advocacy campaigns.
· Graduate degree-level education in media/journalism/social studies
· 3-5 years’ post bachelor’s advocacy experience working ideally within the human rights sector.
· Proven technical advocacy and stakeholder management skills
· Proven project management/ or campaign coordination experience
· Experience in facilitation
· Good understanding of the LGBTIQ+ sector and knowledge of the advocacy issues relating to LGBTIQ+
· Good research, writing and presentation and project management skills
· Good communication and interpersonal skills
· Ability to respond timeously
